wax off!

January 19th, 2008

This is a method for cleaning wax spilled onto hard surfaces.  These photos demonstrate cleaning ski wax / wax, but the same method works with candle wax (it just requires a little less heat).  Note, I don’t think this works to get wax out of carpet.

  • wax spill Things got a little crazy during the snowboard wax application, wax got on the hardwood floor.  Mom’s gonna be pissed.
  • wax cleanup1 Lay a paper towel over the wax
  • wax cleanup2 Using a low-ish (I used 3 - 4.5) setting, iron the paper towel.  Try to keep the paper towel from moving.  If you have very large blobs, you will see discolorations through the paper towel.  Keep doing this until you are quite sure that even the hardest and largest blobs have sufficiently melted.
  • wax cleanup3 You can fold the towel and use the back side too, if it isn’t too soaked.
  • wax spill cleaned Yay, the wax is gone.  Now we can finish cleaning up this project, take the wax we didn’t spill and hit the hill.

Scars

January 15th, 2008

Lots in here, but I can’t really stop long enough to get a window open to write it down in.

For some reason my head tells me that a laptop will help solve this. But I know it to be a lie: I need to prove the corp. vmware image runs in the osx version of vmware and migrate to the new server first.

I want an easy widget to include a “song of the day” via. hopefully a stream.

Anyway, I was repairing the scars on my and thinking about it and here are a few of those:

snowboard scard

  • This deck has been with me since 2004. And it has seen more than its share of whoa.
  • The p-tex candle trick does fill in the gashes, but it requires a pretty healthy sanding the repair is made.
  • Trying to sand it too early is a mistake and will compromise the repair job.
  • The repair requires a lot of heat.
  • If you rush it, you will have to do it over, eventually.
  • After some sanding, the injury will be smoothed over, but the mark will always be visible.  It may not be felt, but it will always be seen.
  • It will never be “what was”
  • Avoiding the rocks is a good way to avoid having to do this.
  • Getting a new deck is a arduous, expensive process and I don’t want to deal with that — I like this (cheap, scratched, imperfect but loved) deck.

It somehow seemed to relate to everything else in my head at the time.

Ski Wisp

January 24th, 2004

Although nice weather had been prevously forecast, it was very cold on the drive up there. Fortunately, with some coaxing the lady at the Comfort Inn desk allowed us to check into the room very early. This made suiting up for the cold a whole lot easier.

We could see our hotel from the lift, and the lift from our hotel So we rented some blades and got our steeply discounted lift tickets (thanks to the “Wisp Snow Play” pass I had picked up at East Coast Board Company) and waddled off to the bunny slopes!

The snowboarding/snowblading itself wasn’t terribly good or bad. The slopes/lifts were relatively empty owing to the fact that it was a weekday. The cold didn’t seem to bother us too badly although a few “hot pockets” handwarmers were utilized throughout the day. We took a break about two for some chili cheese fries to celebrate charlie hustle’s last day of being 23.

this week is full of excitement.

January 12th, 2004

From the Snowboard FAQ:
* Do I need to wax my new board?

The guy at the Ski Chalet Service depot says a brand new board needs $12 hand wax to last longer, the $8 belt wax is apparrently inferior in his opinion. I should expect to leave my board with them for a day or two. I forgot to ask what day of the week would be best to bring it in.

today i registered for nanog30. February is the right time of year to see Miami, says me.

snowblover

January 9th, 2004

I bought a deck off ebay yesterday. I’m psyched. I’ve never seen one like it before: a totally blank deck ripe for stickering. 160 cm, made by Gen-X, and i got it for a super bargain.

A sticker idea.

Today it stayed below freezing most of the day, I expect snowmaking has begun in earnest at higher elevations. Mr. Hustle’s latest script gives us a status:
