…and I can type it entirely with my left hand.

Interesting new possibilities in efficiency are afoot!

Here are the characters available (assuming I break the rule about using the opposite-hand shift key):

  •   !@#$%QWERTASDFGZXCV and maybe B 12345qwertasdfgzxcvb

(thirteen letters)

…and the right hand:

  •   ^&*() YUIOPHJKL:”NM<>?67890-=tyuiop[]\hjkl;’nm,.

(eleven letters)

(both numbers are prime)

Firey Squirrel

Firey Squirrel

Often people ask me about the patch on the shoulder of my jacket. It is a squirrel on fire and it is in reference to a story of about a squirrel and a rookie cop and … well, you should just listen to the story yourself on the This American Life website. The story about the cop and the squirrel starts about 19m : 50s into episode 115, “First Day”.

Wonderfarm

January 19th, 2008

I would like to think that I’ll try anything once. I’m not sure if I can, I’m not sure if I want to.

When I was in Costa Rica with D they had “chicken of the tree” as a sort-of novelty dish (but I think the local people there eat it as we would eat, say, duck or lobster … a sort of delicacy to the bourgeois). Having lived with her and her pet iguana for years (and, oh, D is vegetarian) there was no reason to discuss trying it. Anyway, the thinking I did in that situation makes me sure that I could never eat something I’ve had or lived with as a pet.

Artichoke DrinkSo it was another one of those heck yea, I’ll try anything once! Kinds of moments when I saw these cans, 2 for $1 at the H-mart in Merrifield. “Wonderfarm Artichoke Drink” … some shit imported from Vietnam that normally sells for $o.79/can and the grocer is cutting me a deal. Thanks pal, I’ll take one. (I only need one to try anything once but, you know, I’m just not anticipating that this stuff is really gonna be any good. Grocer, pal, you gambled and lost. Bum luck.) The can was in all different languages and it was a weird 11.1 oz size and, anyway, it was movie night and I thought someone might try it (but nobody expressed interest).

I tried it, and you might like to know, it’s pretty good! It tastes a lot like southern sweet-tea.

Improv Everywhere

January 17th, 2008

So, for some other reason, which I won’t go into here, J’fy sent me an email this morning pointing me to Improv Everywhere’s site. I had forgotten about this troupe, but I was thrilled to see that there were links on their front page to associated groups in my area who participated in No Pants 2k8 yesterday. And based on an overheard exclamation, I learned that a co-worker’s husband was one of the organizers of the event and was interviewed on the nightly news about it. Of course, they credit it to Pants Free DC and fail to mention that it is nationwide event, but whatever. I’m not going to bash Fox News [sic] for getting it wrong or spending too much time on this story (since they’re so busy covering the important things going on in our world). But I will point out that the Post got it right.

Quinine? What’s that?

January 7th, 2008

quinine bottle I was thinking about what I put in my body the other day and on the list is “Tonic Water contains Quinine”. And I started to wonder to myself: “What’s quinine? And then I proceeded to have an experience very similar to Zack’s, all the way down to the last comment:

“…you’ve never read Little House on the Prarie, or you’d know that quinine cures malaria. So, drink up!”

squid.us

August 20th, 2007

You may find it amusing that NBC News anchorperson Brian Williams did a cameo on Sesame Street telling the childrens that “Today’s Word Is Squid”. Sure, that’s worth a smile. :)

But is it just me, or is it truly one of the amusing facets of that there’s a whole blog devoted to squid stuff? And what’s more, there’s enough stuff that it gets posted to regularly — sometimes multiple posts in a day! Every post is worth a look, too. No junk here. I know that squid are (the recent word of the day and) something of a regular red herring (pun intended), but when they are immortalized in the lolcat cannon, you know it is a meme to stay.

After browsing this site, I think you’ll agree that its creators, Scott Beale and Mike Monteiro are totally deserving of the “inordinately fond of invertebrate” badge from the Order Of The Science Scouts.
