I need me some Kitchen-Aid

January 30th, 2006

Okay, well, maybe not that brand exactly but as I took all the appliances out of the kitchen to the dump last week I have a need to get some appliances on order pronto. Selecting them has proven to be a frustrating task, but armed with new information from ConsumerReports.org I feel slightly more comfortable with the process.

Collective Intelligence

January 9th, 2006

I said to Pat, “why does idiots always have to be plural? What do you have against singular idoicy?” To which he replied with his maxim:

The collective intelligence of the world is a constant, it is the population that is increasing.

Baseball is in the air

January 9th, 2006

Today the Washington Post reports that Nats, Post Radio Nearing Deal To Air Games. The idea is that if this deal works out games this summer will be broadcast over more powerful radio stations so you might actually be able to hear the games while, oh I don’t know, driving by a tall building or maybe, possibly in the stadium itself. Nats fans should dream so big.

The news isn’t all rosy however. The article also says that Dave Shea probably won’t be asked back. We’ll miss you, Dave. The article doesn’t definitively mention Charlie’s status. Maybe I was blinded (deafened?) by the excitement having a new team in town, but after the first couple of games and they got to know each other Charlie and Dave were a great combo.

Well, it’s ‘o6 so we will have to make some changes. Change the (BP) uniform color slightly, move the fences in, shake up the bullpen, can the announcer. Again, the only constant is change.

An English Problem

January 7th, 2006

I recieved an email today with the phrase “an honor” and it set me to action to find the answer to a question I’ve had for a long time. I was probably told this anwer in freshman English, but that was a long time ago. My question is, if you are supposed to use the article a with words that begin with vowels and the article an before words that begin with consonants, why is “an honor” correct?

The answer, I found, in this article: Articles, Determiners, and Quantifiers. It says:

we use an before singular count-nouns that begin with vowels or vowel-like sounds (an apple, an urban blight, an open door). Words that begin with an h sound often require an a (as in a horse, a history book, a hotel), but if an h-word begins with an actual vowel sound, use an an (as in an hour, an honor).

PostSecret Exhibition

January 5th, 2006

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the PostSecret exhibition in Georgetown. Hundreds, thousands of secrets publicly displayed on postcards. Wierd, cool, public, personal. It was all kinds of things. Each postcard was an image, each image a thousand words, each one describing a journey. Through life, to realization, through the postal system, through the pile of mail, to this show.

I highly recommend it for anyone within a couple of hours drive.

Girl Scout Parents’ cookies.

January 5th, 2006

Ask me about girl scout cookies!Okay … I just got an email from an acquaintance announcing that girl scout cookies are coming available again. Now, I’m fully aware that girl scout cookies are the best cookies, period, but I’m also fully opposed to buying girl scout cookies from non-girl scouts. From either moms or dads, either in the office or via email, I believe that it violates the spirit of the venture and breeds in the girls the idea that the work part of life is mommy/daddy’s job if I buy the cookies from parents.

Nevertheless my appetite has been whetted for girl scout cookies. So my question is this: are there any ACTUAL girl scouts out there selling girl scout cookies and if so, would they please contact me so that I may place an order.

Thanks.
