Resolve two thousand eight
January 1st, 2008 | by jg3 |My resolutions for 2008:
- No alcohol except wine except on vacations
- Exercise 50%
- International trip
- No fast food
- Write/blog daily
- Finish house project
Pushing yourself to improve in the ways you can see always requires optimism and self confidence. As each of these will be somewhat difficult here’s a quick note on why I’ve chosen to do these things. Maybe it will serve later to keep me on track.
1. No alcohol except wine except on vacations
With this I am resolving to put aside all beer and liquor for the year. I’ll allow myself to relax this restriction when I go on vacations because part of the reason to go stay in a place with a swim-up bar is to swim up to the bar. This will be good for me to do if only because I’ll be taking in fewer beer calories, it is a good area in which to stop wasteful spending, and I’ll have an opportunity to get to know more about wine. Who knows, maybe I’m a latent wine snob?
Oh, I think I would also have to make an exception for any chance I get to try out a drink with a comrade which they’ve brewed by hand.
2. Exercise 50%
Last year I made a calendar to track what percentage of days I worked out. I didn’t get anywhere near 2/3 like I wanted to, so this year I’m re-setting my goal to a far more reasonable number. I intend to break a sweat at least every other day, on average. The weeks I’m lazy on vacation or during the holidays, it will be nice to think of all the weeks (during spring and summer, most likely) where I busted my hump 6/7 of the time.
3. International trip
I want to see more of the world and one key way to do that is, see more of the world. I want to take a trip to a place outside my home country that I’ve never been to before. Who knows what else that will bring.
4. No fast food
Not eating fast food will necessarily require that I be better in planning for meals and unexpected events. I suppose that may also mean eating at home more often and thus saving money (hopefully). Now, defining exactly what is and is not “fast food” is may be a bit slippery, but I can tell you that McDonalds, Wendy’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, and Kentucky Fried Chicken are definitely fast food and those are exactly the kinds of places I’m looking to stay away from.
5. Write/blog daily
I’ll either post here or make travel notes offline (which I may or may not put online). I want to improve my writing and I want to be able to create “content” more easily. This is a skill which will come in handy when, if ever, I actually have something to say. It will also push the server upgrade project that has been languishing or I’ll go nuts.
6. Finish house project
This month I’ve lived in this house for two years and there are still a few things which are not perfect. They are written down on a list in the drawer downstairs. I want to have them all done before the year comes to a close. I don’t want to have stuff that isn’t right for me, and without those projects done, my house is stuff that isn’t just right. I’ll be a-fixing that now.
