I need me some Kitchen-Aid

January 30th, 2006 | by jg3 |

Okay, well, maybe not that brand exactly but as I took all the appliances out of the kitchen to the dump last week I have a need to get some appliances on order pronto. Selecting them has proven to be a frustrating task, but armed with new information from ConsumerReports.org I feel slightly more comfortable with the process.

I’m a GE gal myself. Can’t go wrong with the General!

You know, had I not checked out what Consumer Reports had to say about it I would have written off GE the same way I write off GM. With the same kind of ignorant, self-righteous cynacism of pseudo-anti-american american pseudo-youth (that’s a term(?) that probably needs a post of its own). I would have taken the commonplace stance that American manufacturers are building stuff with lower quality than they did a generation ago because they can’t keep up with foreign manufacturing costs and I would have expected their stuff to have huge repair problems.

That said, I almost went nuts through the appliance-selection process by trying to make it all crystalize around a Maytag range that has features I love but a look I don’t like. I felt a little stupid getting stuck on kitchen appliances because of the way they look and not the way they operate, but SO much of the kitchen-design process is exactly about look right after function.
I’m rambling, and there’s a whole post in this too because these are thoughts I’ve had for a long time, but maybe you see my point. If not, soon (not too soon) you’ll see my kitchen.
